Revelation Chapters 12-13 (The Innermost) Rings Thirteen through Eighteen of The Woven Rings of Revelation
An Interactive Presentation of Thematic Symmetry (Chiasm / Parallelism)
This is the final study that completes the larger body of work introduced here: The Woven Rings of Revelation: Intro
This presentation showcases the six innermost woven rings of the book of Revelation, which are numbered thirteen through eighteen when counting from the outside in. As presented, these six rings are exhibited or expressed through 112 lines of text. Three of the rings are very small, together expressing through only 11 lines!
Ring Thirteen opens with 12:1-4a and closes with 13:1b-18. (13 lines and 55 lines)
Ring Fourteen opens with 12:4b and closes with 13:1a. (1 line and 1 line)
Ring Fifteen opens with 12:4c-d and closes with 12:17. (1 line and 1 line)
Ring Sixteen opens with 12:4e and closes with 12:15-16. (1 line and 6 lines)
Ring Seventeen opens with 12:5-6 and closes with 12:13-14. (5 lines and 5 lines)
Ring Eighteen, the innermost, opens with 12:7-9 and closes with 12:10-12. (11 lines and 12 lines)
The way the text is organized makes it pretty easy to identify this as a 6+6 chiasm that pivots between verses 9 and 10 of chapter 12. If our view was narrowly constrained to just the text featured in this one study, we wouldn't suspect that this chiasm actually pivots around the central point of the entire book and that the pattern extends outward to its extremities. But, as revealed through this series of presentations, this 6+6 chiasm is just a subset of the whole, and positioned at the center. All told, the way I account these woven rings, the book resolves as a 18+18 chiasm. With each opening and closing text forming a woven ring, these eighteen encompass every word of its 22 chapters, spanning 1325 lines!

The eighteenth and innermost ring wraps around the center point of this special book's grand chiasmus. Here, the hinge of the book is flanked by two more hinges. It opens with a 4+4 chiasm and closes with a rare form ("split" or "doubled") of a 5+5 chiasm. It's a beautifully elegant design. If a chiasm brings our focus to the hinge, this text should be given the attention it's due.
The book's center emphasizes the following expressions:
"he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him."
X
"Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down,"
What a glorious and triumphant announcement!
At the flanking hinges, we find:
"who is called the devil" X "and Satan"
X
"because of the blood of the Lamb" X "and because of the word of their testimony"
Reflect on this for a moment. Our God is an awesome God!
Explanation:
What you see above is an exhibit of the linguistic structure that appears throughout the Bible. The featured passage of scripture is straight from the Bible. Nothing has been added or removed or shifted out of sequence.
What's the point of studying this kind of symmetrical design? Firstly, be inspired by the awesome beauty and intricacy of the Author's Word. The structure also conveys meaning to those seeking knowledge and wisdom! In an elegant way, it suggests where the Author places emphasis. It presents context in a very refined manner that guides us to ask questions we would otherwise not be inclined to ask, subsequently leading us to profound insights we would not otherwise glean! How are the paired elements alike and how do they differ? In what specific ways do they compare? Why are they paired? Ask the questions prompted by the holy spirit as you're being informed by the structural comparisons.
Directions:
The interactive features will vividly illustrate the structural design. Pass your mouse cursor over the passage. Hovering over a vertical bar or a line of text will cause it to be highlighted together with its matching elements. If you see a bar or a line of text called out for special attention, click it to open a Commentary Window (which can be repositioned by dragging) and freeze the relevant background highlighting.
Tip: When a presentation is too big to fit on your device screen, you can make adjustments that will allow you to see the elements of interest together onscreen for easier comparison. Right clicking on a bar will collapse it to a single line - a very useful feature! Make your browser full screen - try F11. You can also adjust the zoom (ctrl- or ctrl+ to zoom out or in). If you have a monitor that rotates into a portrait display, leveraging that vertical real estate can be very useful.
